Located in Ace Hotel, an early 20th century building surrounded by scaffolding, you can’t really tell from the outside that there is a café on the left of the main entrance. The coffee aroma instantly hit us as we tried to adjust to the dimly lit lobby with a long table, sectionals and sofas.
Décor and ambience
It’s a café, a hotel lobby, either or, you could sit at the lobby’s long table, sofas or stand at the long counter with your coffee in the café facing 29th Street.
The lobby area has the old fixtures, mosaic tile floor, stained glass ceilings and a vintage American flag. Free Wi-Fi is available at the lobby. Lots of people had their coffee and were glued to their electronic devices. No one seemed to be in a hurry to leave. We don’t think you need to purchase anything to sit there and relax.
Stumptown Coffee is located on 29th Street with an outdoor entrance between the Breslin and the main doors to the lobby, and an indoor entrance between the lobby doors and the main elevators. It was quite confusing when we first entered the lobby expecting the coffee bar to be in the middle of the lobby.
Coffee: Type, price and taste
Get a macchiatto, Con Panna, espresso, cappuccino, mocha, latte, Americano or iced coffee. We had the Americano ($3), which tasted bitter and bold, totally different from Americano in Starbucks.
The best thing about W. 29th Stumptown Coffee is you could take a sip of your coffee and if you don’t like it, ask for a different cup. We witnessed a customer taking a sip and asking for another type of coffee. The friendly barista gave her the options even when there was a line forming behind her.
Stumptown Coffee carries a variety of sweets including sweets from Momofuku Milk Bar and brownies from Choc. A. Brownie Company.
