Vietnamese iced coffee, or cà phê sữa dá, is Vietnamese for coffee with milk. It’s made with a dark roast coffee brewed with a metal coffee filter called a phin. Brew the coffee over a cup with about a tablespoon or two of sweetened condensed milk, then add ice.
Pretty simple right? Yes, though the phin does take some time to brew. So I’ve included two versions to make it, in case you’re in a hurry, or just don’t have a phin at home.
Two Methods
Here are two ways you can make Vietnamese iced coffee at home. The traditional way is with a Vietnamese coffee maker, also known as a phin. And I found using a French press worked too.
Phin
To use a phin, add ground coffee into the filter, screw on the top and set it on top of your coffee mug. We also pour in 2 to 3 tablespoons of hot water to moisten and swell the coffee before pouring in more water.
You can read more about using a phin here. It drips slowly but it’s worth the wait.
French Press
For a faster method, use a French press. This is the method I’ll run you through in this recipe.
Also, note that really you can just use any of your favorite coffee brewing methods. Just use Vietnamese coffee, add sweetened condensed milk and you’ll have Vietnamese iced coffee.
Vietnamese Iced Coffee Ingredients
- 2 tbsp dark roast ground coffee (Cafe Du Monde Coffee and Chicory)
- 1 tbsp sweetened condensed milk
- 7-8 ice cubes
Tips for Making Vietnamese Iced Coffee
Coffee
Vietnamese iced coffee is made with a dark roast coffee. I used coffee from nottea.
Use any dark roast coffee, or a popular coffee you can use is Cafe du Monde’s Coffee and Chicory. This is a blend of coffee and ground chicory root frequently used in America to make Vietnamese coffee.
Sweetened Condensed Milk
I recommend starting with 1 tablespoon of sweetened condensed milk. Taste the coffee and if you feel you prefer it a little sweeter, add more.
That’s usually all that’s added to make Vietnamese iced coffee, though another popular Vietnamese coffee drink to try is Vietnamese egg coffee. Yes, egg. Check out our Vietnamese Egg Coffee recipe here.
