How to Make Iced Swedish Egg Coffee

What is Swedish Egg Coffee?

Swedish Egg Coffee is a unique way of brewing coffee with a raw egg and its shell. 

Coffee is proven to increase alertness and improve cognitive performance. Meanwhile, eggs are an excellent source of high-quality protein. They contain essential nutrients such as vitamin B6, B12, and vitamin D. When combining coffee with eggs, the result is a clean, smooth, rich, and creamy cup of coffee that has little to no bitterness or acidity.

Swedish Egg Coffee is a traditional brewing method originally popular in Sweden. It was brought to the United States by immigrants in the late 1800s. Studies found that eggshells help remove bitterness and acidity from coffee, while the egg clarifies the coffee and allows the grounds to separate from the brewed coffee easily.

The resulting taste and flavor is amazing and smooth. You won’t even realize there’s an egg in there. It possesses a perfect balance of flavors with an aftertaste that lingers for quite some time. 

Using a paper filter is not recommended as it will absorb all the natural coffee essential oils resulting in bland and dull tasting coffee. The goal is to preserve as much oil as possible for a balanced and rich coffee.

How to Make Swedish Egg Coffee

  1. Crack the whole egg, including the shell, into a measuring cup or a mixing bowl.
  2. Weigh 30 grams of coffee beans and grind slightly coarser than a grind used for a regular cup of drip coffee. You can also opt for pre-ground coffee, but make sure you are using a coarse grind.
  3. Add in ground coffee.
  4. Smash the eggshell and mix well with a fork.
  5. Boil water and add mixture to the boiling water.
  6. Turn to medium heat and continue to boil for 5 minutes, or until the foam is gone.
  7. Add 1 cup of cold water. The purpose is to help settle the grounds.
  8. Pour everything into a French Press or strainer. Press down to filter the grounds.
  9. Add ice cubes in a glass. Slowly pour in the glass.
