St Patrick’s Day Latte: How to Make Irish Shamrock Latte

Have you ever wondered why excessive drinking is linked to St. Patrick’s Day?

Why a seemingly religious day on March 17, in observance of the death of Saint Patrick, a fifth-century patron saint of Ireland, is the day for partying and drinking lots of alcohol?

St. Patrick’s Day is a day where Christians are traditionally ‘let loose’ from the rules and restrictions of Lent (from Ash Wednesday to Good Friday) to party – eating and drinking whatever they want, along with dancing and singing.

But for us, St. Patrick’s Day is the perfect time to combine coffee and alcohol.

So, if you’re looking for ways to enjoy alcohol and coffee at the same time, look no further!

I have created the Irish Shamrock Latte – a warm alcoholic coffee beverage, just in time for the celebration.

How to Make St. Patrick’s Day Latte

1.  Start with a double shot of espresso in a coffee cup.

NOTE: You can opt for a strong coffee using other brewing methods such as a Moka pot, French press, and Aeropress if you don’t have an espresso machine at home. You’ll get equally delicious espresso using these methods.

Additional information on how to use Moka pots, French presses and Aeropresses is available on our blog. Please read: (1) How to Brew Espresso with Moka Pot  (2) How to Make Coffee with French press (3) How to Brew Coffee with Aeropress.

2.  Use cold milk and froth it until the temperature reaches 140 to 150°F. Set aside.

If you don’t have a steam wand, use a handheld milk frother or even a mason jar.

3.  Add approximately ½ teaspoon Irish Cream syrup and ½ teaspoon Whiskey to the espresso.

4.  Pour frothed milk down the center of the cup to swirl the milk, espresso, Irish Cream syrup, and Whiskey together.

5.  Spoon a dollop of milk foam, aka microfoam, on top of the latte.

Use an etching tool or a toothpick to etch your favorite pattern. For this recipe, I am adding some green by using food coloring in my microfoam.

Here comes a shamrock latte art, which is the most iconic symbol of Saint Patrick’s Day.
