Alongside the reappearance of the PSL (pumpkin spice latte) and Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew on the Starbucks menu in autumn, is the Salted Caramel Mocha.
But you don’t have to wait for autumn for this chocolatey, sweet and slightly salty blended coffee drink.
You can make it all year round with our Salted Caramel Mocha Starbucks copycat recipe.
What is in a Starbucks Salted Caramel Mocha?
Starbucks lists the ingredients of the Salted Caramel Mocha as Milk, Mocha Sauce, Brewed Espresso, Toffee Nut Syrup, Whipped Cream, Caramel Sauce and Sea Salt Topping.
They combine mocha sauce and toffee nut syrup with coffee and steamed milk, then top it with whipped cream, a drizzle of caramel sauce and a blend of turbinado sugar and sea salt.
To make it at home, we’ll be using similar ingredients. And if you don’t have some of them at home, I’ve included a few replacements which will work just as well.
Salted Caramel Mocha Ingredients
- ¼ cup espresso
- 1 ½ tbsp chocolate sauce
- 1 tsp toffee nut syrup (or hazelnut syrup)
- Pinch of salt
- 1 cup milk
- Whipped cream
- Caramel sauce
- Sweet & Salty topping (⅛ tsp salt + ⅛ tsp turbinado sugar)
Tips for Making Salted Caramel Mocha
Espresso
If you’ve checked out my other Starbucks inspired recipes, you’ll notice I almost exclusively use a moka pot to make coffee for the drinks.
I feel it’s the next best option to create concentrated coffee that you can still taste through all the additional flavors most Starbucks inspired recipes require.
But if you don’t have an espresso machine or moka pot at home, you can still make these drinks! So this time I switched it up and used a French press to make coffee for this recipe.
Check out our guide to making espresso using a French press for tips on how to brew with it.
Sauces
I used Torani Chocolate Sauce and Torani Caramel Sauce.
The Torani line of sauces mix really well in hot or cold drinks, so I always have a bottle of my favorite flavors stocked in my kitchen.
The chocolate sauce will be mixed in. And the caramel sauce will be used to drizzle on top of the whipped cream. So when you take the first sip, you’ll taste a delicious blend of caramel. Plus, the drizzle makes the drink presentable.
Syrup
I used Monin Hazelnut Syrup.
Starbucks uses a Toffee Nut Syrup in their Salted Caramel Mocha. You can also purchase a toffee nut syrup from Monin. But if you don’t have it at home, or want a replacement, I enjoy my drink with hazelnut syrup. It’s nutty and slightly caramelized.
Milk
I used oatmilk.
Feel free to use your milk of preference and steam it before mixing with the coffee.
You can easily steam milk using an electric milk frother. Or for an even simpler way, just place the milk in the microwave for a few seconds.
Sea Salt Topping
I used store bought whipped cream and a sweet and salty topping.
Starbucks tops their Salted Caramel Mochas with whipped cream and a blend of turbinado sugar and sea salt.
You can do the same and combine equal amounts of turbinado sugar with sea salt to top on your mocha. Turbinado sugar is minimally processed and bit dark, similar to brown sugar.
If you’re looking for an alternative or don’t want to purchase Turbinado sugar, I used brown sugar and salt, which did it’s job for this copycat recipe.
