Rest stops along Brazil’s south, and southeast highways are just as good as those found in the US. However, we found one along Florianopolis and Sao Paulo that was top notch – better than any we have ever seen in the US.
These are the aspects the rest stops shined in:
1. A quiet TV room with comfortable seats
2. Super clean toilets with seats if you need to rest
Fans to give better ventilation inside. A squeaky clean floor.
3. Security inside
Each customer entering the rest stop was given an alarm sensor which had to be returned on the way out. This prevented theft at the stop.
4. Plenty of food to choose
You have a choice of freshly made sushi, burgers, pasta, pizza, Brazilian rice and beans, and pastries.
5. Unique shopping
A vast selection of toys, souvenirs, gifts, local products, and candies.
6. Coffee at Route Cafe
Coffee was the most exciting part of the rest stop. Graal rest stops are found everywhere in Brazil. The one we stopped at was located at BR116 between Florianopolis and Sao Paulo.
First off, Route Cafe, the section that served coffee had two sophisticated espresso machines. There were two baristas serving espresso, cappuccino and cafe espresso con leche (espresso with milk). The cafe offered sweet and savory foods, teas and frappés (iced coffee).
And look at the espresso with cream on the side:
So, if you are planning a road trip in Brazil and feeling antsy because you are afraid you won’t find a good cup of coffee, fear not! If you stop at one of the Graal stops you will get your coffee and more. These rest stops have the gasoline you need including ethanol and diesel.
Most importantly, be very cautious when you drive on Brazilian highways. Brazil has one of the highest death rates from driving-related accidents in the world. Don’t drive when it is dark because highways are poorly lit, and you may not be able to see potholes, speed bumps, and road signs. Flash your headlights when going through narrow roads.
