Looking for a way to celebrate Valentine’s Day? Coffee lovers, look no further than the Pink Velvet Macchiato, inspired by Dunkin.
(And if a latte is more of your thing, check out our Pink Velvet Latte. Or if you like mochas, our Red Velvet Mocha.)
What is a Pink Velvet Macchiato?
The Pink Velvet Macchiato is as Dunkin describes, “Dunkin’s rich espresso with red velvet cake flavor and hints of cream cheese icing, and when served iced, creates a colorful pink-layered look for the perfect photo.”
To make it at home, we’ll combine flavors of red velvet cake with cocoa powder and hints of cream cheese with cream cheese and giving it its pink color naturally.
This drink was available for a limited time during Valentine’s Day and was also available along with their Pink Velvet Latte.
You might be wondering, what’s the difference between the macchiato and latte? It’s all about the order that you pour the ingredients together.
Macchiato vs Latte
Both the macchiato and latte are espresso based drinks. However, the way that they are prepared is different.
A latte is typically ⅔ steamed milk, ⅓ espresso and topped with a thin layer of milk foam.
In a macchiato, on the other hand, milk is poured first, followed by espresso, which results in a layered look with the espresso on top and milk on the bottom.
Here, we’ll make the macchiato.
Pink Velvet Macchiato Ingredients
- ¼ cup espresso
- 1 ½ cup milk
- 1 oz cream cheese
- ½ tbsp cocoa powder
- ½ tsp beet powder (or use pink food coloring)
- ½ tbsp powdered sugar
- Ice
- Drizzle of chocolate sauce
Tips for Making Pink Velvet Macchiato
Espresso
I used illy Intenso whole beans to brew espresso using a moka pot.
I recommend using a moka pot to brew concentrated, espresso-like coffee if you do not have an espresso machine at home. The moka pot is inexpensive and takes up less space than an espresso machine.
Check out our guide to brewing espresso without an espresso machine to help you decide which brewing method you should use to make coffee for this macchiato.
Milk
I used almond milk. This recipe will work with your preferred milk whether it’s whole milk or a plant based milk alternative like oat milk.
Cocoa Powder
To give the red velvet flavor to this macchiato, we’ll use cocoa powder.
Also, feel free to use chocolate sauce, like Torani Chocolate Sauce if you have that on hand.
Beet Powder
My Pink Velvet Macchiato is pink due to beet powder. You don’t need to use a lot of the powder to get the color. And don’t worry – this drink does not taste like beets. You can get beet powder on Amazon.
If you don’t have beet powder, you can also use pink food coloring in replacement.
Powdered Sugar
If you’re using chocolate sauce, which already has sugar in it, you don’t need to use powdered sugar.
Toppings
Dunkin tops their macchiato with a drizzle of chocolate sauce, which is what I did for this copycat recipe too.
I used Torani Chocolate Sauce.
