You’ve probably had Nutella, or at least heard of Nutella at some point in your life. Have you thought about how it’d taste in coffee?
Being a fan of Nutella (did you know February 5 is World Nutella Day and there are Nutella cafes, one in Chicago and another in New York?!?!), I thought about how I could add it to coffee.
So I put together this Nutella coffee recipe. Two of them actually.
One is simply putting Nutella in coffee and as I set out to find a ‘healthier’ version, I’m also sharing that version too.
But first, here’s a little about this delicious chocolatey and hazelnuty treat.

The history of Nutella
Nutella‘s history dates back to 1946 in Italy when there was a shortage of cocoa powder. To save cocoa powder, pastry maker Pietro Ferrero, mixed a little cocoa powder with hazelnuts and sugar into a paste. It was named SuperCrema and meant to be spread on bread.
By 1964, it was given the name Nutella and sold in jars. The 1965 design is still quite similar to what it looks like today.
Also, the name Ferrero may sound familiar because yes, Pietro Ferrero was also the creator of the Ferrero Rocher chocolates, another chocolate and hazelnut treat.
What is Nutella made of?
If you look at a jar of Nutella, you’ll see the ingredients are sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts, skim milk, cocoa, soy lecithin as emulsifier and vanillin (an artificial flavor.)
It is gluten free and does not contain any artificial colors or preservatives. A serving size is two tablespoons and contains 200 calories.
Nutella is very transparent about their 7 ingredients, like that their hazelnuts are from Turkey, Italy and Chile and they are working towards making it 100% traceable.
And the much talked about ingredient in Nutella, palm oil is also sourced sustainably. (The production of palm oil is frequently associated with deforestation but Nutella has a certification that makes sure that the production is done ethically and done to protect and conserve the environment.)
Despite this transparency and ethical production regarding the palm oil ingredient, it is still palm oil. Because you may not want to start your day with Nutella, I came up with a coffee drink inspired by the chocolatey and hazelnuty flavors found in Nutella, but using hazelnut syrup and cocoa powder.

Nutella Coffee Ingredients
- 2 shots (2 ounces) espresso
- 1 cup almond milk or other milk alternative
- 1 tablespoon Nutella
- 8 coffee ice cubes
- Whipped cream/cold foam (optional)
Coffee
There are a few ways you can make espresso. If you do not have an espresso machine at home, you can use a moka pot or a French press. Alternatively, like I did in this recipe, try using a very concentrated cold brew coffee. I went with this method since I usually have a mason jar filled with cold brew concentrate in the fridge.
I made my cold brew coffee concentrate using a French press and used two cups of water to one cup of coarsely ground coffee, resulting in a very strong concentrate. The goal is to use a concentrated coffee so you can taste it among the Nutella and almond milk.
Almond milk
Use almond milk, regular milk or any of your favorite milk alternatives. I chose to use Califia Farms barista blend almond milk. I like using barista blends for my coffee recipes because it’s a non dairy alternative that is formulated to foam like regular milk. Regular almond milk just doesn’t foam as well.
Nutella
As mentioned above, Nutella is a sweet hazelnut and cocoa spread. I’ve seen it almost every grocery store and also on Amazon.
Coffee ice cubes
I like using coffee ice cubes instead of water based ice cubes because it solves the problem of diluted coffee. When the ice cubes melt, you’re just getting more coffee in your cup! Read our guide to making coffee ice cubes, including how to make flavored coffee ice cubes.
Whipped cream/cold foam
Top this Nutella coffee treat off with a layer of whipped cream or cold foam. The Nutella Coffee tastes great on it’s own, but if you want something extra, these toppings are also so easy to make.
For the whipped cream, you can make this yourself by pouring heavy cream into a bowl and mixing it with a mixer on medium high speed for about 5 minutes, or until stiff peaks form. Scoop it over the Nutella coffee.

How to Make Nutella Coffee
Step 1
Blend prepared coffee, almond milk and Nutella in a blender.
Step 2
Pour mixed coffee over a cup of coffee ice cubes.
Optional, add cold foam or whipped cream on top.
How to Make ‘Healthy’ Nutella Coffee
If you have coffee every morning but don’t want to start your day with Nutella, but love the flavor of hazelnut and coffee, try this version.
‘Healthy Nutella’ Coffee Ingredients
- 2 shots espresso
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1 cup almond milk or other milk alternative
- 1 teaspoon hazelnut syrup
- 8 coffee ice cubes
Coffee
You’ll need two shots (two ounces) of espresso for this ‘healthy’ version. If you do not have an espresso machine at home, you can also use a moka pot or a French press to achieve a similar coffee to an espresso.
For this ‘healthy’ Nutella coffee, I used a moka pot and used hazelnut flavored coffee.

Hazelnut syrup
I used hazelnut syrup from Monin.

Step 1
Make espresso with an espresso machine. If you do not have an espresso machine at home, use a moka pot or French press.
Then add cocoa powder to hot coffee. Stir to dissolve as much as possible. Pour in almond milk and hazelnut syrup.
Step 2
Add coffee ice cubes to enjoy an iced version.
For a hot version, steam the almond milk and add coffee, cocoa powder and hazelnut syrup.
