I’ve done a ton of mocha recipes, because what’s not to love about coffee and chocolate together?

Mocha is the word to describe the combination of coffee and chocolate.

There’s a port city on the Red Sea called Mocha, which might have had an influence on the name. The city takes credit for spreading coffee around the world due to its location where it was possible to transport coffee.

Or it could have been named after a type of coffee bean called mocha, which originated in Yemen and is known to have a chocolate flavor.

Either way, I’m thankful someone came up with the idea of putting chocolate and coffee together because it’s this combination in a milkshake that will make you want to drink it all year round.

Here’s how to make a Mocha Milkshake.

Mocha Milkshake Ingredients

Tips for Making a Mocha Milkshake

Espresso

I used a stovetop moka pot to make a concentrated, espresso like coffee.

To make espresso, you need an espresso machine. However, if you don’t have an espresso machine, your goal is to make a coffee that is as concentrated as possible. This way, you can taste the coffee through the flavors found in the milkshake.

Check out our guide to making espresso without an espresso machine. We cover 3 easy methods, including the method I used – the moka pot.

Ice Cream

I used vanilla ice cream.

You can also use chocolate ice cream and omit the chocolate sauce, or still add the chocolate sauce if you want a lot of chocolate flavor in your mocha milkshake.

The same thing goes for coffee ice cream. You could potentially leave out the espresso if you feel the coffee ice cream is enough coffee flavor for you. Or use both coffee ice cream and espresso for a strong coffee flavor.

And if you’d like to try making your own ice cream at home, you can! You don’t even need a special ice cream maker and no need to churn with our no churn ice cream recipe.

It involves just 3 ingredients – heavy whipping cream, sweetened condensed milk and vanilla extract. For a coffee flavored ice cream, add instant coffee.

Just mix the ingredients together with an electric mixer, pour it into a loaf pan and freeze overnight. The first time I made it, I was so happy that it turned out with the same consistency you’d find in storebought ice cream.

Milk

I used whole milk. I find it makes the milkshake thicker, versus using a dairy-free version which is what I usually use, like almond milk.

If you prefer your milkshake to be really thick, you can also try omitting milk.

Chocolate Sauce

I used Torani Dark Chocolate Sauce.

This is the brand I use for the majority of my coffee recipes. Torani sauces blend well with hot or cold coffee and in this case, in a milkshake too.

Toppings

I used whipped cream, chocolate shavings and chocolate sauce.

The whipped cream was storebought, but you can make it at home if you prefer. Just use an electric mixer and mix heavy cream on medium-high speed until stiff peaks form. Add in vanilla extract or a little vanilla syrup to make it slightly sweet.

For the chocolate shavings, you can purchase it, or use a chocolate bar and grater to get the shavings.
