The lighted sign with the word “COFFEE” at the front of Kinship Coffee Cooperative draws attention to anyone looking for a place to have a cup of coffee in Astoria Queens. Located on the busy Steinway Street near 30th Avenue, Kinship Coffee Cooperative is a new addition in Astoria’s coffee scene.
Décor and ambience
The glass door opens to an uncluttered and clean space. A large round wooden table with chairs occupies the center of the shop. To the left and right and front of the shop, along the perimeter are wooden narrow bar tables and stools. There is no lounging area in Kinship or electrical outlets.
Groups of people sat on the round table and a few were standing by the green glazed terra cotta roofing tiles. This is definitely not a dimly lit place for relaxation but great for a little work. They have free WiFi.
Two baristas worked at the bar equipped with coffee machines and a moveable dessert cart with a simple wooden coffee menu mounted on the wall.
Coffee: Type, price and taste
The macchiato was $3.00 served in a miniature white cup with a small spoon and saucer. Macchiato is a combination of espresso and cappuccino served in a small cup. Italians usually drink macchiato in the afternoon.
Kinship uses coffee from Stumpton and Ceremony. The coffee selections include drip coffee, cappuccino, latte, mocha and espresso. Tea and hot chocolate are listed in the wooden menu too.
It was a perfect match to have the sweetness of the espresso shortbread ($2.75 per piece) with the slight bitterness of macchiato. Even the banana chocolate chip muffin ($3.75 per muffin) tasted great with the macchiato.
