What is a mocha?
A mocha is an espresso based coffee drink. The difference between a mocha and all the other various espresso based coffee drinks is one ingredient – chocolate.
The name for this drink possibly came from the name of a port city in Yemen, Mocha. And due to its location on the Red Sea, it was this city that was responsible for spreading coffee around the world since the 15th century.
Another possibility is that the drink was named after a type of coffee bean from the city of Mocha. These mocha coffee beans have a chocolatey flavor and may have been the inspiration for the mocha coffee drink we know today.

The hot version is made with shots of espresso, steamed milk and chocolate, which can be added in the form of cocoa powder or chocolate sauce. It is then usually topped with whipped cream.
To make an iced mocha, all you have to do is mix cooled down espresso, cold milk and chocolate together, then add ice cubes. You can also add whipped cream if you’d like.
Here are more details so you can make it in just 5 minutes:
Iced Mocha Ingredients
- 2 ounces (¼ cup) espresso
- 1 cup milk or milk alternative
- 2 tablespoons chocolate sauce
- 6-8 coffee ice cubes
- Whipped cream (optional)
Coffee
As mentioned, a mocha is an espresso based coffee drink, which means to really call it a mocha, it needs to contain shots of espresso.
You can make yours with cooled down shots of espresso (if you don’t have an espresso machine or a Nespresso machine, you can also make it with a moka pot or a French press.)
But for this super simple iced mocha recipe, I wanted to make it as fast as possible, so I used two shots of very concentrated cold brew coffee with Stone Street Coffee Cold Brew whole beans. I always have a mason jar of concentrate in the fridge so I could just grab it out of the fridge.
So for this iced mocha recipe you can use:
- Espresso using a moka pot or French press if you don’t have an espresso machine.
- Strong cold brew concentrate (I usually do 1 cup coffee ground to 2 cups of water – here’s a guide for how to make cold brew coffee at home.)
- Strong Keurig or drip coffee (check out how to make iced coffee with a Keurig)
The goal is to use concentrated coffee so you can still taste it alongside the milk and chocolate sauce.
Milk
Choose your favorite milk. This can be whole, skim milk or any milk alternative. For my coffee recipes, if I’m not using whole milk, I like to use dairy free barista blends. The blends taste like regular milk alternatives but were made to froth better.
While not necessary, I just like having my iced coffee with a little foam on top, created while you shake the ingredients together. I used Califia Farms almond milk.
Chocolate Sauce
I consider this iced mocha recipe a treat (not to have every morning due to the sugar content!) so I add my favorite dark chocolate sauce from Torani, which is made of sugar, cocoa, chocolate liquor and no artificial preservatives.
You can also use cocoa powder (no added sugar), melted chocolate or any other chocolate sauce you may have on hand at home. Since I’m making this super simple iced mocha, the fastest method is squeezing in the tablespoons of chocolate sauce.
Coffee Ice Cubes
To avoid diluted coffee, I use coffee ice cubes. Instead of freezing water to make ice cubes, freeze a tray of coffee. I make mine with cold brew coffee. You can also add flavoring to the cubes.
