A marocchino is a balanced yet complex coffee beverage that combines the taste of coffee and chocolate. This beverage is so easy and fun to make at home with just a few ingredients.
It is important to use fresh coffee, as the quality of coffee has a significant impact on flavor if you want the best cup of Marocchino.
Marocchino History and Origin
Marocchino, which means Moroccan in Italian, was created in Alessandria, located in the Piedmont region of Italy. Its origins can be traced back to a bar called Bar Carpano, where the marocchino was first served back in the 1930s.
Apparently, the marocchino got its name because of its color, which is similar to the brownish leather of a hat produced in a nearby factory. The barista was creative enough and invented this dreamy beverage which had spread throughout the rest of the peninsula since then.
Marocchino vs Mocha
Mocha, or Cafè mocha, is also a coffee beverage made with espresso, steamed milk, and chocolate. Both marocchinos and mochas are very similar to each other, but they both have different ratios of ingredients and different serving portions.
Mochas are often topped with whipped cream and chocolate syrup, whereas marocchinos are topped with foamed milk and then dusted with cocoa powder.
What Goes Well with a Marocchino?
Marocchino is a good choice to get your morning started or as a treat along with some pastries, such as cookies, cupcakes, donuts, sweet rolls, etc.
Marocchino also pairs well with cheese, such as gouda, cheddar, and Swiss cheese. In general, milky and creamy cheese varieties pair well with marocchino.
If you prefer something light and nutritious to pair with your marocchino, fruit is the way to go. Citrus fruits, like oranges and tangerines, will make a great combination. Strawberries, blueberries, peaches, and kiwis also go well with a marocchino and won’t ruin the flavor of your coffee.
Marocchino Ingredients
- 16 – 20 grams coffee (about 3 tbsps)
- ¼ cup chocolate (chocolate bar or chocolate chips)
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tsp powdered sugar
- Cocoa powder
How to Make a Marocchino
- Make hot chocolate by adding ⅓ cup of milk in a saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
- Whisk in chocolate bar and powdered sugar. Stir until hot and smooth. Pour into a cup.
- Pull an espresso shot. Add to hot chocolate and sprinkle a layer of cocoa powder using a strainer.
- Froth milk using the remaining ⅔ cup of milk. Pour frothed milk into the coffee.
- Top with cocoa powder.

Step 1
Make hot chocolate. Add ⅓ cup of milk in a saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Whisk in the chocolate bar and powdered sugar, and bring to a simmer. Stir constantly until hot and smooth.
Pour hot chocolate into the coffee cup. Set aside for later use.
Step 2
Pull an espresso shot and pour it into the same coffee cup. Sprinkle an even layer of cocoa powder using a strainer.
Step 3
Froth milk. Use the remaining ⅔ cup of milk and froth with a steam wand. Pour frothed milk. Milk should be poured gently and slowly.
Step 4
Dust with cocoa powder. Simply top the Marocchino with a light dusting of cocoa powder.
