I make a gingerbread house every holiday season. I decided to make classic gingerbread men this year. And while making them, I thought why not put the flavors of gingerbread into my morning cup of coffee?

It’s another way to add a festive touch to coffee and especially for those who love the taste of gingerbread, all of those flavors are present here in this gingerbread latte.

The gingerbread latte used to be one of the Starbucks holiday drinks. While it isn’t on the menu any longer (for now anyway!), we can make it at home.

Here’s how.

Gingerbread Latte Ingredients

Tips for Making a Gingerbread Latte

Espresso

I brewed espresso using a moka pot

If you don’t have an espresso machine at home, I recommend the next best option… the moka pot! This yields a concentrated, espresso-like coffee that resembles espresso. A moka pot is also inexpensive compared to an espresso machine, is compact and easy to clean and use.

Check out our guide to making espresso without an espresso machine to help you decide which brewing method to use.

Additionally, when I want my coffee to taste like certain spices, instead of simply pouring the spices into the hot coffee, I mix the spices with the ground coffee. This eliminates any clumps that will usually form since for example, ground cinnamon does not dissolve in hot water.

So as you’ll see in the recipe, we’ll be adding the ground cinnamon, ginger and cloves in our ground coffee before brewing.

Spices

I used ground cinnamon, ginger and cloves.

These are the spices commonly found in gingerbread cookies. You may also find some recipes that call for allspice instead of cloves. You can also do the same for the gingerbread latte and replace cloves.

Sweeteners

I used a little molasses.

Gingerbread cookie recipes usually call for both brown sugar and molasses. I chose to just put a touch of molasses as I felt it was sweet enough but if you want to add more sugar, add ½ tsp of brown sugar too.

Milk

I used oatmilk. To steam the milk, use a milk frother

Feel free to use your milk of preference. You may also want to steam it before pouring into the milk to keep the coffee hot instead of pouring in cold milk, making the latte instantly lukewarm.

Toppings

I used storebought whipped cream and sprinkled some ground cinnamon on top.

If you want to make your own whipped cream, you can use heavy cream and mix it on medium high speed using an electric mixer. Mix until stiff peaks form and add in a splash of vanilla syrup or vanilla extract.

Gingerbread Cookies

I made my own gingerbread cookies to serve on the side.

You can purchase gingerbread cookies, or make some like I did. It was way easier than I initially thought. It just requires a bit of time to chill the dough so it’s easier to work with when cutting it into gingerbread men.

Check out the gingerbread recipe I used from King Arthur Baking Company. They came out great and most importantly, taste really good.
