Having spent an extensive amount of time in South America, I’ve been inspired by many aspects of the cuisines that I’ve come across.

One common sweet treat I’ve found throughout the continent is dulce de leche. There is something about spreading a generous dollop of dulce de leche on toast for breakfast in Chile or enjoying it sandwiched in an alfajor cookie while in Argentina.

But you don’t have to travel far for dulce de leche.

While I made this dulce de leche latte using dulce de leche I brought back from a recent trip to Ecuador, you don’t have to travel great distances to get yours. The good news is that you can make it at home.

And it’s quite easy with minimal ingredients.

What is dulce de leche?

Dulce de leche is a sweet spread or sauce made of milk and sugar. It has a caramel brown hue. And as simple as the ingredients sound, it tastes amazing.

Can I make dulce de leche at home?

You can make dulce de leche at home.

There are a few methods.

One is by mixing milk and sugar over medium heat. Bring the ingredients to a simmer until the sugar completely dissolves. The result is the caramel-hued mixture. Here’s a recipe for this method.

The other method requires only one ingredient—a can of sweetened condensed milk.

Place a store-bought can of sweetened condensed milk in a pot of water and heat it in the pot while submerged in the water. Do not open the can when you heat it.

When the can has cooled down and you are ready to use it, you can open the can and you have dulce de leche. Open the can and store it in another container. Here are the full steps with images to follow.

Tips for Making a Dulce de Leche Latte

Dulce de Leche

While I used store-bought dulce de leche that I brought back from South America, you can make it at home easily.

If you’re going the store-bought dulce de leche route, you may be able to find it local grocery store or find a Nestle brand one on Amazon

But if you can’t find it in stores, as mentioned above, you can make it at home with two methods. Either heat sugar and milk over medium heat or heat an unopened can of sweetened condensed milk in a pot of water.

Espresso

For the coffee, I used illy Classico. Feel free to use your favorite coffee beans.

As for the coffee brewing method, if you don’t have an espresso machine at home to make espresso, there are other methods you can use to make espresso-like coffee at home. Check out our guide to do so.

I used a moka pot

Milk

I used almond milk for the dulce de leche latte. Use your preferred milk or milk alternative of choice.

Toppings

Enjoy the latte as is, or add a few toppings to make this latte an extra treat. Try putting some whipped cream and drizzle some extra dulce de leche on top of the whipped cream.

How to Make a Dulce de Leche Latte

  1. Brew espresso. I used a moka pot.
  2. Stir dulce de leche into hot espresso until combined.
  3. Pour in milk.
  4. Optional: Add ice for an iced latte. And or top with whipped cream and dulce de leche.
