What is dirty chai?
When a shot of espresso is added to a chai latte, it’s called a dirty chai latte.
In my dirty chocolate chai, we’re going to add another dimension to it… chocolate!
It sounds like there’s a lot going on, but it’s really simple to make. And when espresso, chai and chocolate are put together, it tastes really good.
Dirty Chocolate Chai Ingredients
- ¼ cup espresso
- 1 tbsp chai leaves (or 2 chai tea bags)
- 1 ½ cups milk
- 1 tbsp dark chocolate sauce
- Optional: Whipped cream, cocoa powder
Tips for Making a Dirty Chocolate Chai
Espresso
I used a stovetop moka pot to make espresso.
To make espresso, you’ll need an espresso machine. Espresso is made when hot water is pressurized through tightly packed coffee grounds. The right amount of pressure is applied when you make espresso with an espresso machine.
However, if you don’t have an espresso machine at home, you can make concentrated, espresso like coffee using other methods. This includes the moka pot.

Tea Leaves/Bags
I used loose leaf tea from PMD Tea. They make a really delicious Chai Cinnamon.
If you don’t want to use loose leaf tea, you can also use teabags. I recommend using Twinings Ultra Spice Chai teabags.
Milk
I used whole milk.
Feel free to use your milk of choice. If you prefer a dairy free dirty chocolate chai, your favorite milk alternative will work just as well.
Dark Chocolate Sauce
I used Torani dark chocolate sauce.
This is the brand I tend to use for my coffee drink recipes. I’ve used their white chocolate and caramel sauces too and each mix well into cold and hot coffee drinks.
Plus, I’ve also used it for my coffee caramel pancakes and other desserts, so it’s versatile and one of my must-haves on hand.
Toppings
I used storebought whipped cream and a dash of cocoa powder.
If you want to make your own whipped cream at home, simply use an electric mixer and mix heavy cream on medium high speed. Add in a little vanilla extract or syrup to give it a little sweetness like storebought whipped cream.
And as an alternative, you can use cinnamon instead of cocoa powder.
How to Make a Dirty Chocolate Chai
- Place milk and tea leaves in a pot. Heat on low heat over the stovetop for about 10 minutes. Make sure the milk doesn’t boil. Steep tea in hot milk for about 10 minutes.
- While the tea steeps, brew espresso. I used a moka pot.
- Pour espresso into a mug and mix in chocolate sauce.
- Strain tea leaves and pour milk into the espresso.
- Optional: top with whipped cream and cocoa powder.
