Magnificent twenty foot tall breakers are crashing the ultra-clean sandy shores at Zicatela Beach. You’re in the picturesque town of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico.
It’s a site to behold!
And even better with a cup of coffee made from specialty beans found at Finca Las Nieves Coffee Shop. A stroll along the Olas Altas, which lines this incredible piece of the south-central Pacific coast of Mexico, is where you’ll find these inspiring views… and the caferita that offers a product that has been produced from a single estate since 1874.
As you enter the shop, the sights and smells captivate your senses. Antique photos and processing apparatus draw you in, and the atmosphere is pleasing and inviting. This high altitude deep shade-grown coffee has a rich history.
The plantation from which this particular product comes from and the various apparatus used to process, sort, grind, and roast is well documented at Finca Las Nieves Caferita. Not many places can share a 143-year journey of perfecting a product and process under one roof. But that’s exactly what you’ll find at Finca Las Nieves.
As a visitor to this beautiful little tourist community, I found this to be a highlight of my adventure to a fantastic destination by the ocean in Oaxaca. The caferita is open Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm.
The establishment serves and sells both espresso and Americano. Coffee is sold by the cup or to go in 250 g packaging. They will happily grind them for you if you wish, or you can savor the fresh grind daily from your own set-up.
The Farm
Since the 19th century, Finca Las Nieves has been producing arguably the finest organic coffee found anywhere. This farm which is perched high above the Pacific Ocean in the cloud mountains is alive and well, procuring superb high mountain shade grown “altura” organic coffee. It prides itself in its cultivation methods that protect the unique heritage of the forest and fauna. Finca Las Nieves is truly a remarkable story for any coffee aficionado.
Just an hour and a half drive from Puerto Escondido and high in the cloud mountains is the farm where these beans are cultivated and processed. Day trips and overnight stays at the facility are also available. You can experience a close-up encounter of the farm by taking the excursion from Puerto Escondido.
The day trip is 9 hours long including the three hours of travel. A certified guide takes you to the plantation, and all meals (vegetarian) are included. You’ll experience seed to cup knowledge, coffee cupping, and a tour of the farm.
