What is Whipped Coffee?

Whipped coffee, aka Dalgona coffee, became popular to most of the world because of TikTok and because of how simple it is to make.

It only requires a few ingredients, most you might already have at home – instant coffee, water, granulated sugar, milk and for the chocolate enthusiasts we’re adding cocoa powder and chocolate sauce to top it off.

You mix the instant coffee, water and granulated sugar together until you get a caramel like color (darker brown for the chocolate whipped coffee) and thick consistency.

This whipped coffee is placed on top of milk. Drink it directly or stir the whipped coffee into the milk.

As with the majority of coffee recipes we share, the chocolate version of whipped coffee is really easy to make.

Tips for Making Chocolate Whipped Coffee

Best instant coffee

To make whipped coffee, you need to use instant coffee. Remember, don’t try to use ground coffee, it won’t work because it doesn’t dissolve like instant coffee does.

Here’s the list if you just want to pick one (links to purchase on Amazon):

I use Nescafe Clasico for most of my recipes that require instant coffee. It’s a dark roast that I think goes really well to add a coffee flavor to desserts (like my coffee brownies and no churn coffee ice cream.)

Instant coffee, water and sugar ratio

Once you’ve picked your instant coffee, you’ll just need filtered water and granulated sugar. The ratio is equal parts of all three ingredients to make whipped coffee.

I find 2 tablespoons of each is a good amount to top the milk. But if you want to add more, feel free to add more tablespoons, just remember to add equal amounts of each ingredient.

Type of Milk to Use

This is totally up to you. If you prefer using regular whole milk, you can use it. Or if you prefer a dairy free option, you can use milk alternatives like oat milk or almond milk.

Tools to whip

You don’t need any fancy equipment to make whipped coffee.

There are 3 ways I’ve made whipped coffee:

Whichever method you use, just make sure the mixture becomes thick enough to sit on top of the milk.
