While it doesn’t seem like the Starbucks Black and White Mocha is coming back this year, you can still make it at home all year round and especially around New Year’s with our Black and White Mocha Recipe.
The Black and White Mocha is part of the Starbucks Black and White Mocha Collection, which also includes a Black and White Hot Cocoa (basically the mocha without espresso) and Black and White Mocha Frappuccino (the frappuccino blended ice version.)
What is in a Black and White Mocha?
According to Starbucks’ website, the Black and White Mocha is made with Milk, Brewed Espresso, White Chocolate Mocha Sauce, Mocha Sauce, Whipped Cream and Chocolate Sequins.
Dark mocha and white chocolate mocha are mixed with espresso and steamed milk for a holiday update. The whipped cream is topped with a ‘tie-like’ stripe of chocolaty sequin topping, perfect for New Year’s.
We’ll do something similar here.
Here’s how you can make it at home.
Black and White Mocha Ingredients
- ¼ cup espresso
- 1 cup milk or milk alternative
- 1 tbsp dark chocolate sauce
- 1 tbsp white chocolate sauce
- Topping: Whipped cream, chocolate sprinkles or chocolate pieces
Tips for Making a Black and White Mocha
Espresso
I used a moka pot.
If you don’t have an espresso machine at home, I think using a moka pot is the next best alernative for making espresso like coffee.
Check out our guide to making espresso without an espresso machine. The goal is to make a concentrated coffee.
Milk
I used almond milk and frothed it with a milk frother.
Feel free to use your milk or milk alternative of choice. To froth the milk, it’s really convenient to froth it in a milk frother.
But if you don’t have one at home, you can put the milk in a pot, heat it on the stove and using a whisk, stir until it foams. You can also heat milk in the microwave and shake it in a mason jar until you get a foam.
Chocolate Sauces
I used Torani Dark Chocolate Sauce and Torani White Chocolate Sauce.
I like using Torani sauces because they are so versatile to mix with hot or cold coffee and also to drizzle on desserts or even pancakes.
Toppings
I used thick milk foam and chocolate pieces from a Hershey’s bar.
Starbucks used a chocolaty sequin topping, which looks like tiny chocolate squares. You could use chocolate sprinkles, mini chocolate chips or cut a Hershey’s chocolate bar into tiny squares like I did.
