When fall approaches, we can expect fan favorite, Pumpkin Spice Latte to reappear on the Starbucks menus. Pumpkin typically takes the spotlight when it comes to cafe menus.
But what’s different this year is a new beverage: the Apple Crisp Macchiato.
What is the Apple Crisp Macchiato?
The Apple Crisp Macchiato is a new Starbucks drink that brings in a flavor of fall other than pumpkin.
According to Starbucks, their team started experimenting with apple flavors in the spring of 2020 and took inspiration from apple cider donuts, apple maple syrup, and other apple-flavored treats. The idea of fruit combined with coffee is new for Starbucks and they’ve blended both well in this macchiato.
It is available both hot and iced.
Is the Apple Crisp Macchiato seasonal?
Yes, the Apple Crisp Macchiato is a seasonal Starbucks drink.
It first appeared on the menu in the fall of 2021. We have yet to see if it will be a regular fall beverage like the Pumpkin Spice Latte.
What is in the Apple Crisp Macchiato?
The ingredients for the Apple Crisp Macchiato at Starbucks are listed as Milk, Brewed Espresso, Apple Brown Sugar Syrup, and Spiced Apple Drizzle.
I made mine using almond milk (for a dairy-free version), espresso made using a moka pot, and my homemade apple brown sugar syrup. Here’s how you can make it too.
Apple Crisp Macchiato Ingredients
For the Apple Brown Sugar Syrup:
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 medium red apple, sliced
For the Apple Crisp Macchiato:
- 1 cup milk (or milk alternative)
- 2 tbsp Apple Brown Sugar Syrup
- 2 shots espresso
- For iced version: add ice
- Optional: Whipped cream, caramel sauce
Tips for Making Apple Crisp Macchiato
Apple Brown Sugar Syrup
I made this at home using equal parts brown sugar and water to make a simple syrup. To do so, I dissolved the brown sugar in the water over medium heat. Then I steeped the apple slices in the syrup for the apple flavor.
I suggest 2 tbsp of it, but you can always add more if you prefer your macchiato to be sweeter. Store it in a mason jar to have on hand whenever you want to make this drink again.
If you prefer using a storebought syrup, you can use a combination of Torani’s Brown Sugar Cinnamon Syrup and Apple Syrup.
Milk
At Starbucks, the default for this Apple Crisp Macchiato is 2% milk. When making it at home, you have options. I decided to make mine dairy-free and used almond milk.
Espresso
The great thing about making Starbucks-inspired drinks at home is that you can use whichever coffee beans you prefer.
I used my moka pot to make a concentrated espresso-like coffee and used illy Clasico beans.
Toppings
If you order your drink hot or iced at Starbucks, it’ll come with a drizzle of spiced apple drizzle. You can also top your homemade drink with a drizzle of caramel sauce. Or choose to add whipped cream—or both.
