What is affogato?
The word affogato is Italian for drowned. The affogato coffee drink was named affogato because it consists of a scoop of vanilla gelato ‘drowned’ in a shot of espresso. That’s it! Pour an ounce of espresso over a scoop of ice cream and you have a treat to quickly satisfy anyone with a sweet tooth or anyone who needs a boost of caffeine in the middle of the day.

How do you eat affogato?
As mentioned, traditionally an affogato is a scoop of vanilla gelato with a shot of espresso. But sometimes a single scoop or a single shot isn’t enough. You can double the recipe and also use a different flavor of ice cream. Here are some variations we like:
- Double Coffee Version: Two scoops of our no churn coffee ice cream + two shots espresso
- Decorated Version: One scoop vanilla ice cream + one shot espresso + chocolate shavings (or chocolate sauce, sprinkles, mini chocolate chips)
- Boozy version: Two scoops vanilla ice cream + one shot espresso + 1 tablespoon Kahlua (or any preferred nut liqueur like Frangelico)
