What You’ll Need for Making Coffee in the Microwave
The things you’ll need are easy to find items that are likely scattered around the house already.
- Microwave
- Coffee filter
- Ground coffee
- Binder clip
- Microwave safe coffee mug
- Wooden stick (like a popsicle stick or chopstick)
- Milk and sugar (optional)
10 Steps to Make Coffee in the Microwave
Before we start, please keep this helpful tip in mind and adjust the power level of your microwave to (90) percent power instead of High (100) percent power. This is because using a lower power level will avoid burning your coffee during the heating process.
According to GE Appliances, to change the Power Level (for most models):
- Touch TIME COOK.
- Enter the desired minutes.
- Touch POWER LEVEL.
- Enter the desired Power Level.
- Press START to start the cooking process.

Step 1
Fold a coffee filter into a bag. To do this, simply fold the coffee filter in half, then fold both sides towards the middle, and fold again.

You can also use a cheesecloth for making your cup of coffee if you don’t have a coffee filter.
Step 2
Add about two tablespoons of ground coffee of choice into the bag.
Step 3
Using a binder clip, prevent the ground coffee from coming out of the bag by sealing the top with the clip. Set aside.
Step 4
Pour water into a microwavable coffee mug.

Step 5
Put a non-metallic utensil such as a wooden stick, a chopstick, or a popsicle stick into the mug to prevent or reduce hotspots from developing in the microwave.
Step 6
Put the mug in the microwave. Heat it for 1 to 2 minutes depending on your microwave.
Step 7
Remove the popsicle stick and dip the coffee filter bag in hot water.
Step 8
Let it brew.
Step 9
Remove the filter bag when it is done brewing and discard the coffee ground.
Step 10
Add milk or sugar to your liking, or enjoy as is.
