Despite what most health experts say about the negative effects of drinking coffee when flying, we the coffee lovers, love to indulge in coffee when we fly. If you are like us, chances are you are dead tired by the time you arrive at your assigned seat. Either from lack of sleep or the hassle of going through security.
Coffee and airplanes are the perfect combination. However, airlines are known to serve bad coffee. It had been dreadful drinking coffee at 30,000 feet. Have you felt that way?
“Not anymore!” says Delta.
On our recent flights to Barbados and Puerto Rico with Delta, freshly brewed Starbucks Pike Place Roast coffee was served in a paper cup along with a cookie.
Delta started serving Starbucks coffee in 2013 for select cross-country flights and West Coast Shuttle flights. On February 1, 2015, Delta served freshly brewed Starbucks coffee in all their flights worldwide.
That was good news for us since we try to fly Delta if we can for all domestic and international flights.
How about the other airlines? What are they serving?
For help, we turn to Twitter. Here’s what a passenger said about Air New Zealand’s coffee:

If you are using the Air New Zealand lounge in Auckland, you can order your barista coffee through the Air New Zealand app. Here is how coffee looks like at the airport lounge:

A comment about American Airlines coffee:
Dear American Airlines, I paid a lot of money for this flight. The least you could do is have coffee that doesn’t taste like stale chalk.

Did you know that coffee isn’t free in most low-cost airlines? However, Icelandair offers free coffee. We flew Icelandair from New York to Reykjavik. Their coffee was quite nice:
@lalalalalemon Hi Marie, soft drinks, tea and coffee are on the house. Here you can see our menu http://t.co/pZ7DTltk5C. Have a good flight! — Icelandair (@Icelandair) December 9, 2014
A comment about KLM coffee:
@miaomiaolearn Most of my domestic meals were utterly forgettable. British Airways had amazing crisps; KLM excellent coffee.

If you are flying business class, airlines like Swiss, Lufthansa, China Airlines and China Eastern have their Nespresso. Japan Airlines, Asiana and Austrian Airlines are offering Original Viennese Coffee House Service with 10 choices of coffee including Flaker (coffee with cognac and whipped cream), Einspanner (black coffee with whipped cream and powdered sugar) and Wiener Eiskaffee (double espresso with vanilla ice cream and fresh whipped cream) in tall glass mugs. They are prepared by an inflight chef.
How about economy class?
United Airlines serve Kona Hawaiian coffee, JetBlue serves Dunkin Donuts and Southwest has served LIFT since 2009:
Do you have a favorite airline coffee?
